Botswana - One of Africa's jewels!

One of the main reasons for coming to Botswana is to contemplate nature and its animals. Considered one of the last wilderness sanctuaries in all of Africa, Botswana is distinguished by the abundance of its wildlife, which is exceptionally rich in certain parts of the country. Over 160 different species of mammal have been recorded, including the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros). Africa's elephant population is the largest of any country. There are no fewer than 22 species of antelope, from the small oréotrague to the large kudu, not forgetting the Cape eland, the oryx, the black hippotrague, the Lechwe cobe, the steenbok and, of course, the impala, to name but a few. You can also see hippos, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, baboons and smaller mammals such as galago and porcupine. Cheetahs, hyenas (spotted and brown), wild dogs, Cape foxes, jackals and ratels also populate the various reserves.
Botswana also boasts over 550 species of birds (ostriches, Kori bustards, vultures, marabouts, eagles, cormorants, flamingos, pelicans, herons, Senegal jabirus, cranes, ibises, falcons, rollers, hornbills, touracos, weavers, parrots, etc.) and 170 species of reptiles and amphibians (crocodiles, turtles, chameleons, monitor lizards and snakes).

Botswana is undoubtedly a great safari destination. Wildlife is king here, and wildlife spectacles are matched by few other countries. Barely larger than France (582,000 km²) and with a very low population density (3.5 inhabitants per km²), the country is almost as sparsely populated per km2 as its western neighbor, Namibia. The Okavango Delta, Moremi, Chobe, Makgadikgadi, Central Kalahari and Tuliblock are monuments to African nature.

The town of Maun, considered the tourist capital of Botswana, is the starting point for the majority of expeditions to the large nature reserves in the north and to the Okavango Delta.
The country's main ethnic groups are the Bushmen (or San), Tswanas and Bakalangas, with English and Tswana (or Setswana) as official languages.
While flora and fauna are the stars of this destination, travellers will be delighted to discover the many facets of Botswana's culture by meeting, for example, the Bayei villagers in the Okavango or Basubiya in the Chobe, or the San people.
Botswana is truly one of Africa's jewels, with an incredible wealth of wildlife, colorful landscapes and ethnic diversity. The Okavango delta, with its flood plains and numerous channels, the Kalahari desert, vast grasslands, mopane and Zambezi teak forests, bush savannah and salt plains as far as the eye can see, the pans, sometimes dotted with enormous baobabs. Botswana is often referred to as the "African miracle" for its natural wealth (wildlife, landscapes), its mineral wealth (diamonds and minerals), its economic success and its democratic stability, which are often cited as examples. A first-time visitor to the country is immediately won over, and quickly immersed in a world of unspoiled wilderness. Its landscapes were immortalized in the film "Les dieux sont tombés sur la tête", which introduced Western audiences to the culture of the San people.
